Mrs. Betty Kern is a professional educator with over 18 years experience holding certification in mathematics and physical education. Her Master’s degree is in Exercise Physiology and Adult Fitness. She is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She has also completed two levels of training as an instructor with Yogafit. Mrs. Kern has been a lifelong learner and participant in overall fitness and health pursuits. In 2003, she created a fitness program and curriculum for girls at Springfield High School in Akron, Ohio.
Betty ran competitively in college and continues to train to compete in distances ranging from the 15k to the marathon. Last spring she completed her third marathon at The Boston Marathon thus achieving a lifelong goal! Betty pursues an active lifestyle which includes participation in running, walking, biking, hiking, strength training, swimming, yoga and fitness related activities. She truly lives a health and fitness conscious life while being a wife, mom and teacher!
In 2006, Betty published the Advanced Nutrition and Activity Journal for high school students and developed a similar journal for adults to use independently or with a corporate wellness program. In 2007, the Intermediate Nutrition and Activity Journal was published for sixth to ninth grade students. Betty also founded the PE FIT company in 2006. The company’s goal is to help students, teachers and parents to adopt a healthier, more active lifestyle.
The Nutrition and Activity Program has been successfully implemented at Springfield High School in Akron, Ohio. Students have made improvements in their fitness levels, reduced their weight and percentage of body fat and improved their eating habits. Implementing the fitness activities has been a lot of fun for the students as well as the physical education teachers!
